Application process optimization

Modified on Tue, 2 Sep at 1:32 PM

A well-designed application process plays a decisive role in determining how many applicants actually complete their application. Even minor hurdles—such as too many form fields or unclear buttons—can lead to dropouts.

In this guide, you will learn how to optimize your application process in JobShop to increase your conversion rate and receive more qualified applications.

Overview: What makes a good application process?

A successful application process is:

  • Short forms: Only ask for the most necessary fields (name, email, resume).
  • Simple language: No complicated terms or internal abbreviations.
  • Logical structure: Personal data → (document upload) → Submit.

Goal: Applicants should be able to complete their applications without detours or frustration.

Reduction of unnecessary fields

Why?
Each additional field increases the risk that applicants will abandon the process. Much of the information (e.g., references, detailed resumes) can also be submitted later in the process.

Here's how it works:

  1. Open your application process or your Fast Application.
  2. Check all fields in the application form.
  3. Remove fields that are not absolutely necessary (e.g., phone number, if email is sufficient). To do this, simply send a short email to your ATS and the JobShop support team.

Best Practice: Focus on name, email, and resume as minimum requirements. You can obtain all other information after initial contact.

Clear calls to action (CTAs)

Why?
Unclear or weak wording causes applicants to hesitate. A CTA must make it clear: “Click here to apply!

Examples of strong CTAs:

  • “Apply now” ✅
  • “Submit application” ✅
  • “View open jobs” (on overview or home page) ✅
  • “Continue” (too vague) ❌
  • “More” (unclear where the click leads) ❌

Homepage

  • Place eye-catching buttons such as “View all jobs” or “Apply now.”
  • Avoid hidden links in the body text—buttons convert much better.

Job overview/job lists

  • Each job should have a clear button, e.g., “Go to job”
  • Tip: Use consistent wording for all jobs to create recognition.

Job details page

  • This is where the most important CTA is: “Apply now”.

Application form

  • The submission button should clearly say: “Submit application”.
  • Avoid generic labels such as “Save”.

Run a test

  1. Sign up yourself using your form as a test.
  2. Check whether the process is intuitive.
  3. Get feedback from colleagues.

Unnecessary clicks or unclear wording often only become apparent during self-testing.

Conclusion

A streamlined, clear application process ensures more completed applications.

  • Fewer fields = fewer dropouts.
  • Clear CTAs = more applications.

With these adjustments, you make it as easy as possible for applicants to apply for your jobs in JobShop—and directly increase your conversion rate.
